The Latin word “odoratus” means, as one might guess, “fragrant” or “scented.” This species is a thornless shrub with an upright habit and large, very soft maple-like leaves. While most raspberry species have white flowers, this species has purple (lavender-pink) flowers up to 5 cm in diameter. The flowering period is very long and can last a couple of months. The plant produces flat red fruits with a sweet-sour taste and crunchy texture. The species is only partially self-fertile, so two genetically different plants are needed to obtain a good harvest. The plants offered for sale are genetically different.
