This ancient variety was created by farmers in a small French town called Prin. Initially, the farmers grew grape vines, but after phylloxera (a harmful insect) destroyed all the vines, they had to find another way to earn a living. They then decided to start growing wild strawberries. The strawberries they grew proved so tasty and aromatic that the best Parisian restaurants wanted to buy them .The berries had a ripening period of 40 days, hence the name given to this variety (“40 of Prin”). However, during World War I, the strawberry fields of Prin were almost completely destroyed. Fortunately, the cultivar was saved thanks to a few gardening enthusiasts. It is said that the jam made from these berries is particularly aromatic.
