What is it?
It is a (small) landscape composition made up of stones, rocks, and gravel, with plants growing between them.
Is it good for cats?
Of course! First of all, cats love to climb and sit on observation platforms. Secondly, they prefer to walk and lie down on clean, dry surfaces. You can also incorporate a small house into the rock garden where your cat can sleep, or even create a miniature village (for inspiration: Babbacombe Model Village).
What materials?
Different types of gravel, crushed stone, stepping stones, pebbles, lava rocks, sand, etc. Some people even use bricks and concrete blocks. The goal is not only to create a beautiful composition, but also to ensure excellent drainage for the plants. Be careful not to use sharp gravel, which would be uncomfortable or even painful for cats’ paws.
Which plants?
A rock garden is suitable for all low-growing, sun-loving plants that need well-drained, relatively poor soil. Examples:
- Catnip
- Cat thyme
- Mountain tea
- Chilean strawberry
- Taiwanese raspberry
- Bellflower or Campanula
